Vanessa is a sociologist and assistant researcher at the Institute of Social Sciences of the University of Lisbon, belonging to the research group: LIFE (Life Course, Inequality and Solidarity: Practices and Policies). Her research has focused on several topics and areas: childbearing postponement, reproductive decisions and parenting, work-life balance, public policies, gender equality and masculinities.

She has collaborated in national and international projects, including "Men's Roles in a Gender Equality Perspective", a project funded by the European Economic Area. She also coordinated two key projects funded by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology: "The double postponement: men and women coping with childbearing intentions in their late 30s and early 40s" and "Childbearing and Parenthood in a context of low fertility, family change and the economic crisis" (PARENT). She is a lecturer at the OpenSoc InterUniversity PhD in Sociology (University of Lisbon). She also coordinates the Observatory of Families and Family Policies (OFAP).
